Receiving Blankets

Receiving blankets are wonderful for swadling your newborn. Most hospitals provide a free receiving blanket when your baby is born, but you will want to have several on hand at home. Not only are they great blankets, but you can use them for burping cloths or to warm a changing table or changing fixture when you are out shopping.

As your baby grows, she may chew or suck on corners of a receiving blanket. Obviously, you will have teething rings and other teething toys for your baby, but there is nothing wrong with allowing your baby to use her receiving blanket during teething.

A receiving blanket works well with car seats, too. You can drape the receiving blanket over the car seat and tuck in your baby, or wrap your baby before you strap her in. Either way, receiving blankets are portable and have many uses. You will be glad if you carry one or two with you in your diaper bag.

Receiving blankets are great for swaddling your infant. Swaddling will help keep your infant secure and warm for the first few days of life until his internal thermostat kicks in. Swaddling can also keep your baby from being disturbed by his or her own startle reflex and calm your infant if he/she is over stimulated. How to swaddle.
